What is CO2 and what are the primary sources?

Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is a colourless and odourless gas. It is a natural component of our air and makes up part of the carbon cycle.

Additional CO2 is released into the Earth’s atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels such as brown coal, hard coal, peat, natural gas and petroleum. The recent increase in worldwide CO2 emission is not only the primary driver of current climate change, it is also causing acidification of the oceans.
